The Agora Files – Part III – Online Edition – Epilogue: Hank Rhodes

I hear some yelling from the other side of the hangar just as I arrive at the exterior doors to see what Violet has brought for me.

It’s impossible to think that both Daniella and Alvin are finally here and captured.  After years of trying to break down the ranks of M&L, everything seems to be coming into place all at the same time.  And to think it would be my sons who played an important role in all of it.

Not that this means M&L is out of the picture or anything.  Not by a long shot.  But with these two captured, things are beginning to look a lot simpler.

Especially if this means we can finally get some answers on how to use their super-powered computer systems.  I have a feeling we’ve only touched the surface of what it can do.  With the full power of their systems behind us, we can take out M&L and whoever else might try to take power after them and really set this country back on the right track.

Violet stands near the doors with a huge grin on her face.

“You’ve done good, Vi,” I say as I reach in for a hug.

Violet is one of the few people in this world I trust with my life.  That’s why I set her up as a nanny for my boys.  Yeah, it’s a severe misuse of her extraordinary talents, but with all we’ve been up to these past few years, I couldn’t risk leaving my boys out there without some solid protection, just in case someone decided to use my kids against me.

“Thanks, Hank,” Violet says, embracing me back.

“It’s been far too long,” I say as I open the door for her so we can go out and see what we’ve got.  “I’m really glad to have you back.”

“I’m just glad I don’t have to keep up with that stupid accent anymore.  It felt ridiculous.”

“For the record, no one told you that you needed to use an accent.”

“Really?” Violet replies, cocking her head to the side.  “I’m pretty sure you did.”

“Well, whatever.  The point is, you’re here, you’re safe, and you’ve brought some presents for me.  Once we get the kids back home and safe, everything will be right with the world.”

“Yeah, about that,” Violet begins.  “I know I should have caught what Alvin was up to when he hired Cyrus for the job.  I just—”

“Don’t worry about it, old pal.  Everything worked out fine in the end.  We should have probably caught on quicker as well.  It’s not like there weren’t the signs that Alvin was going to make another attempt at whatever it is he’s been doing.  Besides, we didn’t even have a clue that Alvin was the guy we were looking for back then.”

“But still…” Violet says, trailing off.

“I stuck you on a couch in my old run-down house, watching my boys, for the past decade.  If anything, I should be the one saying I’m sorry.”

Violet laughs lightly at the comment.

“So, we’re even then, right?” I ask her, holding out my hand.

“We’re even,” Violet says, giving my hand a shake.

“Now, let’s open up our presents and see what we’ve got.”  I rub my hands with anticipation.  Everything we have worked for these past ten years is finally paying off.

“Hank!” Charlotte says, rushing out the doors toward me and Violet.  “It’s down!  The system.  It’s down!”

“I don’t know how they did it, but somehow Nile or Alvin managed to shut their entire system down.  We can’t connect to anything.  It’s almost like it simply ceased to exist.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” I reply, scratching my head.  “Why would they take out their systems when they need them the most?  Unless…”

Those dirty scumbags.  They had a backup plan, didn’t they?  Of course, they did!  Probably some sort of dead man’s switch or something which takes the system offline whenever they have been captured.  And if that’s right, then there’s probably a failsafe included which will somehow cause us a whole lot of trouble.

I run to the helicopter and storm into the cargo bay, Alvin and Daniella are both bound to their seats.

“What did you do?” I scream as I run to Daniella and grab her by the shoulders.  “What did the both of you do?” I turn my attention to Alvin.

“What do you mean?” Miss Nile asks.  They both look honestly confused.  That doesn’t seem like a good sign.  Who could possibly be powerful enough to shut down their systems and what would they be willing to do to those who have been toying around with them?

I run out of the helicopter and into the hangar and scream at the top of my lungs.

“Shut it down!  Shut it all down!  We have to get out of here.  Now!”
