Fat Mogul vs. The Professional Touch

For my regular readers, I hope you’ve noticed quite a few changes around here.  Most obvious is the site, which we’ve talked about before.  There’s also a few other minor changes all throughout the place.  New pages appearing, old pages disappearing, and overall, just updating things all over the place.  There’s a whole lot more that’s been updated on the back end as well, in order to better gauge what people actually want to read, how much of my long ramblings you actually make it through before giving up, and well…let’s just say that I’ve got piles and piles of data being gathered in order to attempt to make this site a much more enjoyable experience for all.

Meaning…when I sit down in front of my computer with the idea of getting out some random piece of word junk so I can get back to the rest of my writing, I actually have to sit here and think about what types of things could be considered useful and/or entertaining for people to read.  When I started this blog, it wasn’t really with anyone in mind.  I would just put out whatever random thoughts which where stuck in my head.  I wouldn’t proof anything, I wouldn’t think about much.  I would just put out content for the sake of clearing my head of that content.

Slowly readers did come along, some friends, some folks who have read my novels and found me that way…and one who happens to be an author I gave a not so glowing review to once…

Now, when I started realizing people were actually reading the junk I was putting out, I instantly became a bit more interested in putting out the type of things I thought people might enjoy, but there was never any real rhyme or reason to it.  That’s still technically true today.  But it’s going to change.

That’s right, in my efforts to work toward more effectively market myself in this world of way too many self-published authors (all trying to pretend they aren’t self-published, of course), I’ve now reached a new point in this website’s evolution.

Planned content… (dun dun duuuuuuun)

Look, I’m not going to pretend that suddenly this site will become the mecca for all those who need to know about whatever topics I’m going to be presenting.  But…the plan is to make this site something more content consumer-friendly.  I’m in the early stages of developing (and understanding) what that actually means, but to put things simply: All those cool marketing smarties are telling me how important it is to not only engage possible customers (a phrase I really despise even thinking about regarding my readers with), but also to enlighten, entertain, and do so consistently.

I could go on for hours with all the information I’ve been reading for the past few weeks about subjects like this (but would be simply regurgitating info you can find readily available for free on the internet, or, for $10 in millions of ebooks available on Amazon now!), but that’s not necessary.  To make things easy for those who might question why I would even consider changing my site from the current format of “Hmmm…should I post embarrassing story about my children and then wax philosophically about it today or discuss how hard I’m trying to use the phrase self-published proudly?” to anything more standardized, here’s my simplified explanation of the changes you might be seeing in the coming weeks to this site here:

The actual content provided her won’t change…at least not much.  The topics discussed on here will still range the same categories it does today, with possibly a few additions.  What will change is the regularity and usability of these discussions.  Whether talking about writing, fatherhood, or correct chair posture, I’ve learned a lot over the years (well…not quite on the last one), and this is information that I could reveal to you all in a much more efficient manner.  So…more series, more planned content, and more regular updates on specific items.

At least, that’s the plan for right now.  I don’t want you to think that this will become just another one of those writer’s blogs that will offer you 101 bullet list items on how to market your books, or constant updates on whom I believe would be best suited to playing my characters when they’re turned into movies.  But, the idea…at least for now, is to attempt to put this content together in a much better way for consuming, you know, so you might have a better idea of what to expect when you come around here on your lunch break or bio-break (I’ve got a great story about this term for some day…)

Of course…I’m still in the early stages of defining all of this…but I’m here to announce the death of the old blog.  I haven’t decided whether to keep the old content around or not…I’m guessing it will stay.  But the future of the blog is impending.  A future that means I have to actually consider it as something more than a brain dump…and find a way to move it forward without just copying every other site out there for every other writer ever.

I’m thinking I’ll use more rainbows as well…because rainbows are awesome.

Anyways, I’ve got tons o’ work to get through today if I ever want to figure out what a professional blog actually looks like…

Have fun out there!
